10 Most Commonly Asked Questions about hannahpad and Cloth Pad Use
We answer 10 of our most commonly asked questions about reusable cloth pads, specifically hannahpads!
1. What is a reusable pad?
Reusable pads also known as cloth pads is a pad option to help manage period flow, vaginal discharge, postpartum bleeding and light incontinence. As the name suggests, you can use and reuse after washing and drying the pad like you would undergarments and clothing.
The reusable aspect may be hard to get your mind around at first but is a mind set change that can be conquered by trying just the one cloth pad. You really have to be willing to try to know whether it’s a reusable menstrual product that you are willing to switch to.
2. Why are they so expensive?
Two words: Top quality. The prices of our cloth pad range reflects the commitment we have to providing only the best certified organic cloth pads. Organic cotton farming is done on a much smaller scale in comparison to conventional farming and ensures the organically grown cotton is untainted with pesticides and herbicides. The organic certification (OCS100) is your only guarantee that what you’re using against your skin is natural and safe. What’s more expensive is buying disposables repeatedly at a cost to your overall wellbeing, health and future of planet Earth.
Our pads are made from certified organic cotton. Only the most natural will touch your skin.
3. What’s the difference between disposables and reusables?
Besides the obvious, the major difference lies in the natural softness and comfort level. We all know that crunchy and rustling sound from disposables isn’t pleasant to hear let alone sit against. Wearing a hannahpad feels like you're sitting against normal cotton underwear. That’s a much nicer feeling compared to plastic, no? Organic cotton makes all the difference in your pants and matters when you're trying to live consciously through the products you choose to bring into your life. Furthermore, you won't have to deal with sticky adhesive bits that ruin your underwear and other unnecessary packaging.
4. How do you carry them?
Carry all your clean cloth pads you’ll need for several changes throughout the day in a pouch or wet bag. Pop the pouch/wet bag into whatever bag you choose you use that day. Just like carrying a wallet, pencil case or make up bag, simply take your hannahpads with you like you would your bag essentials everywhere you go.
5. Do used pads smell sitting in a pouch in your bag?
Used cloth pads folded up and kept inside a pouch or wet bag has minimal to no smell. Surprised? Our use of certified organic cotton means hannahpads are made without any nasty chemicals and therefore would not react to produce strange odours when in contact with your flow. That’s right, your menstrual blood naturally doesn’t have a foul odour. The mixture of toxic chemicals in conventional pads, menstrual flow and sweat from sitting against it for several hours begins to promote bacterial growth. This is then exposed to oxygen and develops an odd smell.
Many customers have noticed how a simple switch to organic cloth pads helps eliminate that very common odour we so used to from using throwaway pads.
6. How long do they last?
We say that hannahpads last up to 3 years of reuse but with personal care they can last longer. Some customers have used their same set of hannahpads for over 5 years. That's commitment to the cloth switch and just think of the long term savings. Incredible!
7. How often should I change my cloth pad?
Above all else, make sure you change your pad as frequently as you need to. This is because everyone's cycle differs in amount and length of flow. How do you know it’s time to change? Definitely when it begins to feel damp against your skin. It is recommended that you change every 3-4 hours whether it be a disposable or cloth pad. On heavy flow days you may need to change more frequently and a little less on lighter days (very dependent on your flow on a particular day/night). Be aware of your flow and don't get lazy about changing regularly throughout the day.
8. Are reusable pads gross?
What's really gross is for single-use disposable pads be tossed away and end up in landfills and waterways. 45,000 tonnes of disposable menstrual waste is produced per year and that’s a terrible burden on planet Earth. By switching to cloth pads so much plastics and money can be saved.
There is nothing disgusting about menstrual blood because it signifies that your body is able to create life and can regulate itself through a very natural internal cycle. It's beautiful not gross.
9. Are they easy to wash and do they stain?

Short answer: Yes, the natural beige organic top sheet may stain with repeated use over months and years. The best way to treat stains is to get into a good routine of rinsing and soaking in stain remover overnight to lift tough stains (from darker discharge) before washing and drying thoroughly.
